This volume is a copy of the original volume of field notes kept by Henderson when he was appointed by the Kentucky General Assembly to survey west of the Tennessee River in 1820. The copy was made in 1877 by William Byrd Page and J.B. Hoeing, who worked for the Kentucky Geological Survey.

William Byrd Page was born in Philadelphia in 1866, the son of a prominent lawyer. He was a weak and sickly child with legs that necessitated heavy iron braces. He was given a bicycle at an early age and prescribed exercise as a way to strengthen his legs.
